Hamilton Lake was originally called Fish Lake.
the first bridge in the county was near the Hogback Hills on Defiance Road.
The first saw and grist mill was located in Flint.
Orland was originally called the Vermont Settlement.
Fremont is 598 feet above sea level.

Indiana was considered a Northwestern State in 1885.
Within Steuben County at this time, between 60 and 70 clear water lakes were reported.
Most of these lakes have gravelly or sandy bottoms and fine beaches.
At this time only one lake had ever been advertised to any great extent.
This lake is Pleasant Lake which for only three years before 1885 become a favorite resort of vacationers.
Coal has been discovered in one or two places in Steuben County.
