Re: Title III Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives
Title III: Language Instruction for Limited English Proficient (LEP) and Immigrant Students, of the Federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, is designed to help ensure that children who are limited English proficient (LEP), including immigrant and youth, attain English proficiency, develop high levels of academic attainment in English, and meet the same challenging State academic content and student academic achievement standards as all children are expected to meet.
Title III requires all States to annually calculate each school corporation’s performance on the Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives (AMAOs) in the following three areas:
· AMAO 1: the number or percentage of students making progress in learning English;
· AMAO 2: the number or percentage of students who become fluent in English; and
· AMAO 3: if the school corporation met performance goals on ISTEP+ testing in
English/language arts, mathematics, and rates of test participation.
For the 2011-2012 school year, Metropolitan School District of Steuben County did not meet the following AMAO(s):
□AMAO 2
□AMAO 3
School corporations that did not meet one or more of the three categories must inform parents/guardians of their status. School corporations that do not meet AMAOs for two consecutive years must develop a Title III improvement plan. The Indiana Department of Education will provide assistance to these school corporations to identify strategies for improvement.
