Bus Incident Update:
MSD of Steuben Countyās foremost obligation is the safety of our students while at school, at activities, and while transporting them. We expect and demand that all of our employees perform diligently and appropriately to fulfill that obligation. When staff does not, corrective measures must and will be taken.
As previously shared, on April 6, 2026, an MSD of Steuben County school bus was involved in an accident on South County Road 300 East. Both the bus driver, Jennie Hammond, and the student were transported to Cameron Hospital immediately following the accident. Both individuals were treated at the hospital for pain and released the same day.
As part of the corporationās internal review conducted shortly after the accident, bus safety video shows Ms. Hammond using a cell phone while driving. The bus driverās use of her cell phone while driving violated school corporation rules. The school corporation is
cooperating fully with local law enforcement and its investigation. Earlier today, the bus driverās employment with MSD of Steuben County was terminated.
The corporation is committed to maintaining the safety and well-being of all of our students and will take all appropriate steps necessary to properly respond to this incident.

The MSD of Steuben County is completing a comprehensive strategic planning process to help guide the districtās future direction and ensure our schools continue to serve students and the community effectively. Community participation is a critical part of strategic planning. We encourage families, staff, and community members to take part in our survey. Your perspectives will help shape decisions that support student success and strengthen our schools. Students in grades 5-12 will be asked to complete the student survey while at school. Check out our video for more details about the process and why we need to hear from you.

April 4th is National School Librarian Appreciation Day! Our librarians do so much more than manage our libraries; theyāre the first contact with technical issues, assist in classrooms, and cover recess and pitch in whenever they are needed. Their dedication to our schools and students is appreciated every day. Be sure to thank them when we return from spring break!

The AMS 7th and 8th-grade bands competed at the ISSMA Concert Competition on Saturday, March 14. Despite losing nearly three weeks of rehearsal time due to cancellations, delays, and illnesses, both groups delivered outstanding performances.
The 7th-grade band gave their best performance of the year on their Group 3 piece and earned a Gold Rating. The 8th-grade band pushed the limits this year by performing a Group 1 pieceāthe first time this has been attempted at AMS in 30 years. Not only did they earn a Gold Rating, they were also awarded Gold with Distinction, an honor given only to the very top-performing bands.
We are incredibly proud of these students and the dedication of our band program. Great job

MSDSC students excelled at the Northeastern Indiana Tri-State Regional Science Fair held on March 14, 2026, on the campus of Trine University. Our elementary schools were represented by more than 20 students, with at least one participant from each school.
Our top elementary winners included Sophia Yagodinski (2nd place), Paul Stevens (2nd place), and Tyler Grothause (1st place). We look forward to seeing what these aspiring scientists accomplish in the future!
We are also incredibly proud of our AMS and AHS students who competed. MSDSC remains the only school system in Steuben County with students participating in both the Junior and Senior Divisions.
Our top overall winner was sophomore Kiara Hohenberger. Kiara earned 1st place and will advance to the state competition on March 28 at IU Indianapolis. In addition to her first-place finish, she also received seven additional awards.
Five students from AMS also competed and performed exceptionally well:
Leonel Salinas earned 1st place in Junior Earth and Environmental Sciences, along with four additional awards.
Aaliya Bell received 1st place in the Junior Materials Science Division and two additional awards.
Kenzie Eldridge captured 2nd place in Junior Plant Sciences and received one additional award.
Hunter Holiday earned 5th place in the Junior Chemistry Division.
Congratulations to all of our aspiring scientists!
